What's a chickadee?

Small, bold, and impossible not to like

Chickadees are little round songbirds in the genus Poecile. They live in forests, parks, and backyards across North America — and they're famous for being curious, clever, and astonishingly tough through winter. Here are a few favorites to get you started.

Tips for your first sighting

  • 1. Listen first. The buzzy chick-a-dee-dee-dee usually gives them away before you see them.
  • 2. Hang black-oil sunflower seeds or suet. Chickadees grab a seed and fly off to eat it.
  • 3. Check the cap and sides — that's how you tell the 7 species apart.
  • 4. Stand still. A patient, quiet hand with seed can sometimes earn a landing.
